Retirees Praise Supreme Court Decision Upholding Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Law; Urges Congress to Expand Number of Drugs Eligible for the Program to Lower Costs for Seniors

Statement from Richard Fiesta, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s rejection of appeals by drug corporations seeking to overturn the Medicare drug price negotiation program:

“Today the Supreme Court sided with common sense and upheld the landmark law allowing Medicare to negotiate lower prices for some of the most expensive prescription drugs used by older Americans. The Court recognized that drug corporations should not get special treatment when they do business with the federal government.

“For nearly 20 years, Alliance members fought to give Medicare the power to negotiate better prices, and the law is already lowering costs for seniors at the pharmacy counter while saving taxpayers billions. But prescription drug prices continue to rise faster than inflation, putting increasing pressure on older Americans living on fixed incomes. Congress should build on this progress by expanding the number of prescription drugs Medicare can negotiate to bring down costs for even more seniors and families.”
