Retiree Organization Endorses Cal Cunningham for U.S. Senate

Cites Commitment to Expand Earned Social Security Benefits

High Point, NC – Members of the Alliance for Retired Americans announced their endorsement of Cal Cunningham for election to the U.S. Senate from North Carolina today. The North Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans is a grassroots advocacy organization with more than 52,000 members across the state.

“Cal Cunningham understands the challenges facing older Americans and retirees in North Carolina. We can be confident that he will fight for our retirement security in Washington,” said Bill Dworkin, president of the North Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans. “He will battle every day to protect our hard earned pensions and Medicare benefits and expand Social Security. We are proud to endorse him.”

Cunningham accepted the endorsement virtually via Zoom, forgoing an in-person event due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has claimed more than 214,000 American lives, 80 percent of whom are over the age of 65. In North Carolina, 3,770 people have died from the virus and 81% of the deceased were over 65.

Cunningham has also pledged to keep the Affordable Care Act (ACA) from being repealed. Repealing the ACA removes consumer protections for 28% of North Carolina residents with pre-existing health conditions and will make health insurance coverage far more expensive.

“The North Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans provides an important voice to North Carolina retirees and I’m proud to have the support of the Alliance and its 52,000 members in North Carolina,” said Cunningham. “Together, we will put this seat back to work for our state. Unlike Senator Tillis, who has spent six years trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act and privatize Social Security and Medicare, I’ll fight to protect these earned benefits, as well as the health and economic well-being of North Carolina retirees.”

In sharp contrast, his opponent, Senator Thom Tillis, has earned a lifetime score of just 10% in the Alliance’s Congressional Voting Record. Sen. Tillis has also worked to cut and privatize Social Security and Medicare and repeal the Affordable Care Act.

“Cal Cunningham supports allowing Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices, a critical issue for older Americans who bear the brunt of escalating prices,” Dworkin continued. “Now more than ever, it is vital that we have senators and representatives in Washington who care about North Carolina seniors and vote accordingly. In 2020 voting for the right person is literally a matter of life or death.”
