Retiree Group Cautiously Applauds Law that Expands Medicaid in North Carolina

Raleigh – Members of the North Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans (NCARA) applauded the expansion of Medicaid into law on Monday. NCARA is a grassroots advocacy organization with more than 54,000 members across the state.

Once fully implemented, approximately 600,000 more adults in North Carolina will be eligible for affordable health insurance. The law is expected to increase the number of people with health insurance in rural parts of the state.

“This is a day to celebrate. Alliance members have worked for years to get Medicaid expansion approved by both chambers of the state legislature,” said Bill Dworkin, president of the North Carolina Alliance. “However, because the law will not be funded until the legislature and governor approve a budget later this year, it will still be months before newly eligible North Carolinians can get the care they need.”

“We will keep fighting to ensure that the budget lives up to the promises made in this new law,” Dworkin added.

The Medicaid program is a crucial lifeline for millions of Americans across the country with limited income and resources. Many older Americans rely on the program for coverage of nursing home and personal care services.
