Alliance for Retired Americans endorses Troy Jackson for Maine Senate
AUGUSTA — Today, the Alliance for Retired Americans endorsed former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson’s campaign to be the Democratic Candidate for U.S. Senate.
“The Alliance for Retired Americans is proud to endorse Troy Jackson,” said Chris McKinnon, President of the Maine Alliance for Retired Americans, a grassroots advocacy organization with more than 21,000 members in Maine and 4.4 million across the country. “He understands the importance of a secure retirement for all Mainers and has worked to ensure retirees receive the full benefits they earned after a lifetime of hard work. He will work to strengthen Medicare, and make sure the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share into Social Security so current and future generations of Mainers get the benefits they have earned.”
Jackson has a long record of standing up for retirees and working people. He was one of a handful of Democrats to vote against Gov. Paul LePage’s budget that raided state employee pensions to fund tax cuts for the rich.
As Senate President, Jackson spearheaded efforts to help retirees make ends meet. He voted to increase the income tax pension deduction for retirees so it matches the maximum annual Social Security benefit, and successfully fought back against proposed cuts to the Medicare Savings Program. Preserving this lifeline helped nearly 45,000 older Mainers living on fixed incomes pay out-of-pocket health care costs.
“Older Mainers can trust Troy to fight for us. We know he will take on the powerful corporations that are driving up the cost of living because he’s done it before,” added McKinnon. “As a state senator, he took on Big Pharma and helped lower the cost of prescription drugs—and we know he’ll work to require Medicare to negotiate lower prices for more drugs as a Senator.”
The Alliance for Retired Americans is a grassroots advocacy organization with 4.4 million members. Founded by the AFL-CIO in 2001, the Alliance now has 40 state alliances and members in every state.
