Retiree Group Endorses Gabe Vasquez for Reelection to U.S. House
Albuquerque, NM – Members of the Alliance for Retired Americans proudly announced their endorsement of Rep. Gabe Vasquez for reelection to the U.S. House from New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District (CD) today. The New Mexico Alliance for Retired Americans is a grassroots advocacy organization with more than 6,000 members in the CD.
“Rep. Vasquez has already proven as a member of the U.S. House that he will look out for New Mexico seniors. He has earned a 100% pro-retiree score in the Alliance’s annual congressional voting record,” said Dennis Conerty, President of the New Mexico Alliance for Retired Americans. “We trust him to work to strengthen and increase our hard earned Social Security and Medicare benefits. He knows that 468,000 people in New Mexico rely on Social Security benefits every month. With another term, Gabe will continue the fight for our earned benefits for current and future generations.”
In contrast, his opponent Yvette Herrell is out of touch with older people in New Mexico, earning just a 5% lifetime score in the Alliance Congressional Voting Record when she was in Congress. She was also a member of the far-right Republican Study Committee, which wants to cut Social Security funding and benefits, raise the retirement age to 69 and privatize Medicare.
“Nearly half a million New Mexicans rely on Social Security benefits, and that’s why I fight to make sure we expand their hard-earned benefits – not cut them,” said Representative Vasquez. “I will always show up for our senior and retiree community and I’m tremendously proud to earn their endorsement this critical election year.”
In addition, Mr. Conerty praised Rep. Vasquez’s support for legislation to lower drug costs by requiring Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices for seniors; cap out-of-pocket drug costs at $2,000 a year; cap insulin copays at $35 per month; and make necessary vaccines free for all Medicare beneficiaries. Herrell did not support the legislation.
“The stakes couldn’t be higher for seniors like me. We need Gabe Vasquez in the House fighting against any Republican plan to cut Social Security and Medicare,” added Mr. Conerty. “That’s why Gabe Vasquez is the obvious choice for New Mexico seniors.”
