Retiree Group Endorses Marlene Galán-Woods in Primary for Election to U.S. House
Cites Her Commitment to Protecting and Expanding Earned Social Security and Medicare Benefits
Scottsdale, AZ – The Alliance for Retired Americans proudly announced its endorsement of Marlene Galán-Woods in the Democratic primary for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District today. The Alliance is a grassroots advocacy organization with more than 4.4 million members including 50,000 in Arizona.
“Marlene Galán-Woods understands the challenges facing older Americans, and retirees in Arizona can be confident that she will fight for our interests in Washington,” said Linda Somo, President of the Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans. “She’s the best candidate to defeat Rep. David Schweikert, who has earned a lifetime score of just 4% in the Alliance for Retired Americans annual Congressional Voting Record, including a 0% score in 2023.”
“We trust Marlene to work to preserve and expand our hard earned Social Security and Medicare benefits. She knows that more than 1.5 million Arizonans rely on Social Security benefits every month,” Somo continued.
“I’m honored and grateful to have the support of the Alliance for Retired Americans!” said Galán-Woods. “In Congress, I will fight for our seniors to protect their quality of life. I will work to ensure seniors’ economic security and healthcare access and I will always protect Social Security and Medicare.”
Rep. Schweikert supports the Republican Study Committee plan that would raise the retirement age, slash Social Security, and impose deep cuts in Medicare. He voted against legislation to lower drug costs by requiring Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices for seniors; cap out-of-pocket drug costs at $2,000 a year; cap insulin copays at $35 per month; and make necessary vaccines free for all Medicare beneficiaries.
“The stakes couldn’t be higher for seniors like me. We need Marlene Galán-Woods in the House fighting against any Republican plan to cut Social Security and Medicare,” added Ms. Somo. “That’s why Marlene Galán-Woods is the obvious choice for Arizona seniors.”
