Trump Talks Social Security and Medicare Cuts; Older Americans Must Reelect Biden to Protect the Benefits They Earned

During an appearance on CNBC’s Squawkbox program this morning, Donald Trump told host Joe Kernen that there “is a lot you can do to cut” Social Security and Medicare.

Below is a response from Richard Fiesta, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, a grassroots advocacy organization with 4.4 million members nationwide.

“Today Donald Trump matter of factly told CNBC’s Joe Kernen that cuts to Social Security and Medicare would happen if he was elected president, once again proving why older Americans should vote for President Biden.

“Cutting Social Security and Medicare would be a slap in the face to Americans who contribute to the program with every paycheck. We earn our Social Security and Medicare benefits, and we will not allow anyone to cut them in order to pay for tax cuts for wealthy individuals or corporations.

“It should not come as a surprise that Trump is joining the growing chorus of Republican extremists who are taking aim at our retirement security. Back in 2020 Trump said that cutting ‘entitlements’ would be a second term issue. Every year he was in office Trump proposed cuts to Medicare and Social Security. He even called for privatizing Social Security, calling it a Ponzi scheme.

“On the other hand, President Biden has stood up for older Americans and protected Social Security and Medicare. He will not cut the programs but instead has a plan to strengthen them by making the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share.

“The contrast between Biden and Trump on protecting our hard earned Social Security and Medicare benefits could not be more stark.”
