Retiree Organization Endorses Betsy Dirksen Londrigan for U.S. House

Cites Commitment to Expanding and Protecting Earned Social Security Benefits

Springfield, IL – Members of the Alliance for Retired Americans proudly announced their endorsement of Betsy Dirksen Londrigan for election to the U.S. House from Illinois’ 13th Congressional District today. The Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans is a grassroots advocacy organization with more than 19,000 members in the district.

“Betsy Dirksen Londrigan understands the challenges facing older Americans, and retirees in Illinois can be confident that she will fight for our interests in Washington,” said Don Todd, president of the Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans. “We trust her to work to expand and protect our Social Security benefits. She knows that many seniors in her district rely on their hard earned Medicare and Social Security benefits, and she’s working to protect all of our retirement security. We are proud to endorse her.”

Dirksen Londrigan accepted the endorsement virtually via Zoom, forgoing an in-person event due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has claimed more than 215,000 American lives, 80 percent of whom are over the age of 65. In Illinois, 9,320 people have died from the virus and 78% of the deceased were over 65.

“I am honored to have the support of the Alliance for Retired Americans in my mission to protect and expand Social Security and Medicare to safeguard the economic security of our Central Illinois seniors,” said Dirksen Londrigan. “People have spent their entire working lives paying into this system, and in Congress I will stand up for our seniors and fight to protect their earned benefits from any cuts.”

In sharp contrast, Londrigan’s opponent, incumbent Rep. Rodney Davis, has earned a lifetime score of just 12% in the Alliance’s Congressional Voting Record in the U.S. House. Davis has also worked to cut protections for people with pre-existing conditions and repeal the Affordable Care Act.

“We can count on Betsy to fight to allow Medicare to negotiate lower prices for the life-saving prescription drugs older people rely on,” Todd continued. “Now more than ever, it is vital that we have senators and representatives in Washington who care about Illinois seniors and vote accordingly. In 2020 voting for the right person is literally a matter of life or death.”
