Statement by Retiree Leader Richard Fiesta on the Nomination of Tom Price
The following statement was issued by Richard Fiesta, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, regarding President-elect Donald Trump’s intention to nominate Rep. Tom Price to be Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“The Alliance for Retired Americans is horrified by the nomination of Rep. Tom Price to be Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This nomination is a declaration of war on seniors, retirees and anyone who is counting on having guaranteed health care benefits when they retire after a lifetime of hard work.
“Rep. Price has earned a lifetime pro-retiree score of just 4% on the Alliance’s Congressional Voting Record. He has pledged to replace our guaranteed earned Medicare benefits with a system of “coupon-care” and vouchers. President-elect Trump ran on none of these proposals. Trump does not have a mandate to destroy Medicare, a program that is supported overwhelmingly by Republicans, Democrats and Independents. If Trump were truly committed to strengthening Medicare, he would not have removed any mention of working to lower the price of prescription drugs from his website shortly after the election.
“The members of the Alliance will fight Trump, Price and House Speaker Paul Ryan every step of the way. We will not stand by and let a program that Americans have paid into for decades, which has provided health care to millions of seniors and saved families from bankruptcy, be destroyed.”
