PA Retiree Leader to Demand Barletta Take Down Social Security TV Ad

PA Retiree Leader to Demand Barletta Take Down Social Security TV Ad

The following statement was issued today by Jean Friday, the President of the Pennsylvania Alliance for Retired Americans:

“Northeastern PA seniors have a lot at stake in the upcoming election for Congress in the 11th District.  As pensions default and 401(k)’s lose their value, seniors need leaders in Washington who will fight for Social Security more than ever.  However, a recent ad run by the Barletta Campaign tells an outright lie about Social Security.

“The ad, which hit the airwaves just this week, claims that Paul Kanjorski is responsible for the fact that there will be no Social Security cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) again next year.  It goes on to claim that a vote for Kanjorski will guarantee that no COLA will be given for 2011.

“Here are the facts: Social Security COLAs are determined by a formula which has been law for decades.  Congress and the President do not make decisions year-to-year about COLAs.  Paul Kanjorski did not vote to cancel the COLA and Lou Barletta will not have the opportunity to vote to reinstate it.  The Social Security Administration has already calculated that there will be no COLA in 2011.  That’s right, the determination for 2011 has already been made!  Yet the ad states ‘If you vote for Kanjorski there will be no increase next year.’  I’ve got news for Lou Barletta, if seniors vote for Kanjorski, Barletta or Mickey Mouse there still won’t be a 2011 COLA.

“Making this ad even more deceptive is the fact that Paul Kanjorski voted to provide seniors with a $250 payment in 2009 which we received.  Additionally, Paul Kanjorski voted to give $250 payments to seniors who fall in the “donut hole” coverage gap in Medicare Part D. Paul Kanjorski has always stood up for seniors.  That’s why the Alliance for Retired Americans gives his voting record a 100% lifetime pro-retiree score.

“Lou Barletta should be ashamed of this patently false ad.  Seniors deserve better from a man who hopes to serve in the United States Congress.  The Pennsylvania Alliance for Retired Americans calls upon Lou Barletta to stop this ad immediately.”
