Millions in Taxpayer Dollars Spent on Self-Promotion by CMS Director Seema Verma
Retiree Group Calls on Verma to Resign Immediately
Richard Fiesta, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, issued the following statement regarding CMS Director Seema Verma’s Use of Taxpayer Funds for Personal PR:
“As head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Director Seema Verma is one of the most powerful government officials in Washington. Thanks to Politico, we learned today that she spent millions in taxpayer funds to try to improve her public image.
“The Alliance for Retired Americans, a nationwide grass roots organization with 4.4 million members, calls on Director Verma to resign immediately. She should do the taxpayers a favor and clean out her desk today.
“This is an outrageous, inappropriate use of taxpayer money, especially given that the Trump Administration claims that health care must be cut to reduce the deficit.
“As CMS Director, Verma has championed dangerous and cruel policies that reduce access to affordable health care for millions of seniors, people with disabilities and vulnerable Americans. She has also failed to promote any policies that would lower the prices of prescription drugs.
“Ironically, had Director Verma implemented policies to strengthen and expand Medicare and Medicaid, her reputation would be stronger, and she wouldn’t have needed to waste the public’s money on high-priced consultants to bolster her image.”
