Freedomworks Pushes Social Security Privatization – And Keith Rothfus for Congress

The radical, corporate-backed Tea Party organization Freedomworks hits Congressman Mark Critz for “opposing Social Security Privatization”.  What does that say about their endorsed candidate, Keith Rothfus?

Jean Friday, President of the Pennsylvania Alliance for Retired Americans, released the following statement concerning the race for Congress in the 12th Congressional District:

“Social Security has taken a back seat in this year’s political season to Medicare as the most discussed retiree issue.  But retirees and, more importantly future retirees, must still be vigilant.  Despite their monumental failure during the Bush Administration, supporters of Social Security privatization are always lurking.  As long as the risky privatization schemes are profitable for Wall Street, the idea will never be without backers.

“Nowadays, candidates take care to hide their support for this idea.  They know how unpopular it is, so they bide their time while spreading false ideas about Social Security to set up another attack down the road.  They are working to convince voters that Social Security is in a crisis situation in need of radical reform to save it – in contrast to the reality that Social Security has a robust Trust Fund, ran a surplus throughout the recent recession, and requires only minor adjustments to make it solvent long past 2033.

“But these pro-privatization forces are also active in another way.  They are pushing to elect more and more candidates sympathetic to their cause.  One such candidate appears to be Keith Rothfus.  The Tea Party group Freedomworks created a website called, which asks visitors to decide which vote by Critz ‘…hurts Pennsylvania the most’.  It lists as one of the choices, ‘Opposed Privatization of Social Security’.  Mark’s opposition to Social Security privatization comes as no surprise to Alliance members.  That’s just one reason he has a 100% lifetime pro-retiree score with the Alliance!

“It’s time for candidate Keith Rothfus to come clean about Social Security privatization.  His campaign website has a section under ‘issues’ for Medicare, but none for Social Security.  Does he support privatization?  If so, he should level with Southwestern PA voters and tell us so.  If not, he should disavow Freedomworks and reject their endorsement.  Until he does so, seniors will know he doesn’t stand for us.”

The Pennsylvania Alliance for Retired Americans, led by President Jean Friday of Westmoreland County, has over 300,000 members and 144 local affiliates across the Commonwealth.  PARA’s mission is to educate seniors and the public about retiree issues, and organize seniors to advocate for their interests in Harrisburg and Washington.  To learn more, visit
