Alliance Endorses Rep. Tammy Duckworth for U.S. Senate

Alliance for Retired Americans members proudly endorsed Tammy Duckworth for election to the U.S. Senate from Illinois today at an event at the Workers United Hall in Chicago. The activist organization cited Rep. Duckworth’s strong commitment to improve the quality of life for older Americans and her leadership in the fight to protect and expand Social Security and Medicare for current and future generations.

During her three years in Congress Duckworth earned a 96% lifetime pro-retiree score on the Alliance for Retired Americans Congressional Voting Record, including a score of 100% in 2015. Sen. Mark Kirk has a lifetime score of 15%.

“Tammy Duckworth’s leadership on retiree issues such as preserving and protecting Social Security and Medicare from privatization and benefit cuts will help ensure these programs will be around for current and future generations,” said Robert Roach, Jr., President of the Alliance for Retired Americans. “As a senator, she will work to ensure that we expand our earned Social Security benefits.”

Rep. Duckworth introduced H.R. 4144, the Seniors and Veterans Emergency (SAVE) Benefits Act, in the U.S. House in December. The bill would help seniors and veterans by providing a one-time benefit of $581 to offset the announcement by the Social Security Administration that, despite rising costs of many necessities, there would be no cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for beneficiaries this year. The payment amount equals 3.9% of the average Social Security benefit, and 3.9% is the average increase in pay in 2014 for the nation’s top 350 CEOs.

“Retirees can count on Tammy Duckworth to vote in the best interests of older Illinoisans and all Americans,” added Roach.

The Alliance for Retired Americans represents over 4.3 million retirees and community activists, including more than 250,000 members in Illinois.
