Chained CPI Social Security Benefit Cuts Would Affect Seniors Immediately

Washington, D.C. --- Dozens of seniors, in Washington, DC for the Alliance for Retired Americans Leadership Conference, will join with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), other Senators and U.S. House Members for a press event in Room 902 of the Hart Senate Office Building at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, May 8.

Senators Sanders (I-VT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Jack Reed (D-RI), as well as Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), will be speaking at the event. Three Alliance seniors will explain what the chained CPI - an immediate cut in Social Security benefits - would mean to them personally. For more on what the CPI would do, go to Alliance Chained CPI Fact Sheet.

The speakers are unified in their message:

  • No cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid;
  • No Social Security cuts by way of switching to the Chained CPI cost-of-living adjustment formula;
  • Rather, the wealthiest people and corporations need to pay their fair share.

Following the press event, seniors will set off to lobby their elected officials.
