Letters to the Editor: State by State

Your opinion matters. Letters to the Editor are a great way to voice your opinion on important issues that affect your life. Letters typically respond to articles written in a newspaper, they can support or oppose the position a reporter took, but should bring something new and interesting to the debate. We encourage our members to get active and write letters to the editor to ensure that senior issues are given the attention they deserve.

Tips on Writing Letters to the Editor

  • Letters shouldn't be more than 200 words.

  • The subject matter should be relevant to readers, provocative, constructive, timely. Passion is good. So is humor.

  • If you are responding to an article include the title and date of the article (preferably in the first few sentences).

  • Letters must include the author's full name, address and daytime phone number so the newspaper can verify the letter's authenticity.
